Courto’s Katas began in March of 2009. As with most food businesses, it started as a hobby. I made caramels at home, and brought them into the office to share with my coworkers. I wanted to give them more as gifts, and I felt that I needed a better presentation than wax paper and clear freezer bags. So I found a commercial kitchen to rent and a fantastic candy packaging distributor, and put together a brand.
People began asking for boxes to send to friends and family. The stars must have been aligned perfectly in early August. I was laid off from my job and was able to take on my business full time. I was approved as a vendor at the Downtown Sarasota Farmers Market, and have been selling there since the beginning of October 2009.
